This is my interpretation, and it don't make sense.
February 19, 2009
One of the many many things I love about music is how it is open to interpretation.
Jade and I were at the 2nd annual Home Foundation fundraiser concert (which I'm sure Jade or I will blog about in the near future). At the very end of the event, Natalie Grant had us all join in singing a song originally recorded by Chris Tomlin called "God of This City". She had her own interpretation of the song - she just always loved and believed in the lyrics of the chorus, and learned that the songwriters wrote the song about human trafficking - her cause, and reason for The Home Foundation.
Jade had her own interpretation. The lyrics were a sign, that maybe Nashville's really not so bad - and maybe there's more to be done here before she moves on to her next great adventure.
I had my own interpretation - similar to Jade's. I'm always so ready to get up and go. I'm always so ready to get myself out of wherever I am. But right now, I have a team that relies on me. I have a lot to learn here. I have a lot to create here. I have a lot to do...
For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
There are always greater things to come, and greater things to be done. The song uses a "city", but who's to say you can't interpret that city as being more than just a place? Maybe it's a job you haven't finished yet.
As we were leaving the event, the speakers blasted "Under The Influence" by James Morrison. I have always thought his debut album is full of what I call "God songs" (pop/rock songs that can be interpreted as being about family relationships, or love relationships...and could easily crossover to be about God or religion). My friends will argue "Under The Influence" to the death, that it is not about God. But it is my interpretation - that yes, it is. I was happy to hear it after a somewhat religious event - other people have a similar interpretation.
I was driving,
too close to the edge and living dangerously.
I felt a strange warm sensation rising up inside of me,
Like a tidal wave,
Came from nowhere swept me off my feet.
Oh but somehow making me complete now.
Whatever I do I'm under the influence of you...
I could go on for days about the different interpretations my friends and I have for dozens of songs. What songs make sense to you?
