Baby's First Home

October 15, 2008

Hey everyone,

So I'm going to be upfront about it and let everyone know that I don't typically write blogs.  I'm usually very busy and don't spend much time on the computer.  So with that said, I apologize for my few blog entries.  Also, I'm going to be honest with you, I really don't like writing blogs at all.  The only reason why I am doing this is because it supports a great cause.  Being given the chance to choose any charity I'd like to support, I chose my sister's charity.  So let me tell you a little bit about my sister and her charity organization.

So first of all, the sister I am referring to is Amanda Raposo.  She is turning 20 this October 22nd, she attends NYU and dorms in the city.  Basically, my sister is an amazing person who is on a mission.  Her mission is to do good, and she is out of control.  I don't even know where to start.  Since she was very young she has always been very determined and anytime she was challenged, she would repeat under her breath, "I can do it, I can do it..."  Sure enough she would defeat every challenge and take on any obstacle.  She could fall down a flight of stairs, most likely being pushed by me, and she wouldn't make a noise or shed a tear so I wouldn't get in trouble.   Then in the next second she would scream bloody murder if I dared to step on an ant.

In elementary school Amanda was the school president, MVP in every team she played on, and she received the headmasters award, which is the highest award given each year, numerous times.  In high school she became very active in her school's community service program and eventually became the president of it.  While keeping straight A's, playing sports, and maintaining being the coolest girl in school's social life, she makes the time to essentially save the world one step at a time.  She doesn't stop at one issue but rather moves from one to the next as if she's working her way down a list, crossing off sections as she impacts the world one issue at time.  One day she's at nursing home sharing her time with old folks and the next day she's volunteering at a hospital and then the next at a homeless shelter.

Most recently my sister has been doing research in putting together a shelter for teen mothers.  My father donated a building to my sisters organization which is an amazing gift but unfortunately not enough to get a shelter up and running.  Now my sister is working her butt off to get all the right
permits to open a shelter.   Even harder to do, my sister is trying to raise enough money to support running this teen mother's shelter.  In just the taxes and carrying costs of maintaining this donated building, my sister's organization needs have a minimum of $100,000 per year in order to operate.  So now my sister is working really hard trying to find sponsors and entering into all kinds of contests for grants.  Her organization needs to have a steady income of $100,000 per year in
order to open and operate. Most people don't even make $100,000 per year for their families.  She's going to need all the help she can get in order to make this happen but I have no doubt that she is going to do it.

So that's the background story on the charity I support and I hope everyone can help.  Every little thing makes a difference.  Apparently even a blog :)
