Isaac and England [part 1]

March 03, 2009

Day One

When I first arrived to England, my first thought was, "Man I have forgotten that they really do have bad teeth". I have heard once before that the English think it's disgusting that we show our teeth when we smile. I now understand why they would think that, it's not us, it's them.

For those that don't know, I am currently in England, on tour with Ultra Violet Sound. I plan to write a lot of blogs of my journey and this is my first installment.

So I arrived at my hotel which is extremely far from any sort of food, mall or entertainment, and internet is about $15 US dollars for a day, so I am writing this and posting it later [when England gets less stingy with their internet]. So I ate a burger and chips [chips=fries], and I think any time you travel outside of your homeland and see anything different, unusual or bad you automatically assume it's a normal thing in the country you are in. For example, I had a terrible hamburger and I thought, "well I guess it's just a England thing" when it could have been just a bad burger [possibly with Mad Cow Disease]. They gave me BBQ sauce instead of ketchup for my chips and I assumed that is how their ketchup tasted, but it was just their accident. I am sure if they gave me a chicken sandwich instead I would just assume that the burgers 'taste like chicken' in England. So with this mindset, there is very little room to complain, because you are unsure of what is an honest mistake and what is normal to them.

I walked to a BP gas station to buy some food at the "24 hour shopping" section of the gas station, and turns out by 24 hour shopping they mean, 'you have to talk to a guy at the window and guide the employee throughout the store trying to explain to him what a skittle is. When he was pointing to the Hob Nobs and other English treats, I felt like I was on "The Price is Right" yelling, "higher! lower!" to direct him to the treat of my choice.

For anyone traveling to England anytime soon, remember this, the bigger the coin, the more worthless it is, the small tiny thick coins are worth most. The penny's here are the size of half dollars [or dinner plates].

your friend,

-Isaac
