Invisible Children's How It Ends

Government of the people, by the people, for the people is still a relevant notion. How it Ends is proof of that. We cannot overstate the need for intervention from our leaders to stop Joseph Kony's terror. Just this week the Lord's Resistance Army abducted 135 Congolese, including children. We're done with excuses- we want an end to this senseless conflict.

Lobby Days is the crossroads for Africa's longest-running war. Watch this video to learn about why you are vital to the enactment of the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009.

Or refuse the benefits of a democratic political system. It's your call.

YOU Can Join a Movement That Will Make History... Don't Sleep Through a Revolution

Lobby Days is where the magic happens. And by magic, we mean the practical and powerful means of advocacy. Invisible Children’s message is strong, but they need your voice to amplify it on Capitol Hill.

Last week, Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI), Sam Brownback (R-KS) and Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA), Brad Miller (D-NC) and Ed Royce (R-CA) introduced the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009 to help end LRA violence in northern Uganda and neighboring countries. The bipartisan act would require the Obama Administration to develop a strategy within 120 days to "apprehend or otherwise remove Joseph Kony from the battlefield." The bill also authorizes funding for humanitarian assistance in LRA-affected areas, as well as additional funds for recovery efforts in northern Uganda.

And the timing is impeccable as Lobby Days is approaching. Your attendance is crucial to rallying support for this legislation. You (yes, you) have a unique chance to convince your leaders that this conflict deserves notice from the world and inaction is no longer an option. So sign up, and if you can't make it to DC, give and help support the rescue efforts.

GIVE TO THE RESCUE EFFORTS

While we're on the topic, point your browser to our How it Ends site. It's chalk-full of new speakers and content. Don't resist the advocacy, it's just too strong.

In case you missed it - IC founders/filmmakers, Jason, Bobby and Laren, were on Larry King Live to share their experience from The Rescue and give the masses something to talk about - How it Ends.

Stand in Solidarity for Invisible Children with Pete Wentz
Since becoming a dad, I've been thinking about the kind of world my kid is going to grow up in. What kind of man is he going to become? I'm lucky enough to spend my life in front of kids who honestly care what I have to say, and I think this generation has a bad rap. You can be a hipster, a scenester, a goth or a prep -- and someone's got something to say about you. But I never lost hope in us, because we're still standing on the shoulders of great leaders, we've got the resources, the knowledge, and the iPhone to do anything. The only generation to ever change America's course -- I mean really break the chain, were the youth. Every decade saw it: the radicals, the revolutionaries, the punk rock kids, the kids who lit shit on fire, (seriously, watch the Weather Underground). They were the only ones with the balls to think they could change things. And they did.[more...]

This personal and touching journey takes an unflinching look into the lives of Eva Markvoort and her two online friends who are all battling Cystic Fibrosis.

Now at a critical turning point in their lives, the film travels the distance the friends cannot go themselves, capturing the compelling and often heartbreaking realities they face, just trying to take each breath. Update on Science from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
"Because of your efforts we were able to make "great strides" in our research in 2008. We are very excited about the progress in the development in two pills we are calling the "potentiator" and the "corrector". The research conducted last year validated that we are on the right path the developing new therapies that treat the basic defect in CF.

This drug is working its way through our drug trials and is showing great promise! A CF patient in West Tennessee has been participating in this drug trial and has already seen a 25% improvement in lung function, all thanks to one pill! That is something patients have never had, a drug that actually improves lung function! Early 2009 will be a pivotal time in the testing of the "potentiator" as it moves toward final FDA approval.

On March 25, 2009, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announced a drug we are calling the "corrector"- it will treat the faulty gene and its protein production in cystic fibrosis patients. This drug is also showing great progress in the drug trials.

The studies of these drugs and their possible combination are very promising in the development of what could be a major control for CF." -The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation[more...]

May 6: 65 Roses
Photobucket

Mary G. Weiss became a volunteer for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1965 after learning that her three little boys had CF. Her duty was to call every civic club, social and service organization seeking financial support for CF research. Mary's 4-year-old son, Richard, listened closely to his mother as she made each call. After several calls, Richard came into the room and told his Mom, "I know what you are working for." Mary was dumbstruck because Richard did not know what she was doing, nor did he know that he had cystic fibrosis. With some trepidation, Mary asked, "What am I working for, Richard?" He answered, "You are working for 65 Roses." Mary was speechless.

He could not see the tears running down Mary's cheeks as she stammered, "Yes Richard, I'm working for 65 Roses."

Since 1965, the term "65 Roses" has been used by children of all ages to describe their disease. But, making it easier to say does not make CF any easier to live with. The "65 Roses" story has captured the hearts and emotions of all who have heard it. The rose, appropriately the ancient symbol of love, has become a symbol of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.[more...]

May 4: What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Photobucket

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 70,000 worldwide. In the 1950s, few children with the disease lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond.

AUTISM: THE MUSICAL
Photobucket
In 1980, autism was a relatively rare disorder, diagnosed in one in 10,000 children in the United States. Now it is one in 150.

AUTISM: THE MUSICAL counters todays bleak statistics with one womans optimistic pledge to lead a group of autistic children in defying diagnosed expectations by writing, rehearsing and performing their own full-length musical.

Following five Los Angeles children over the course of six months, director Tricia Regan captures the struggles and triumphs of their family lives and observes how this musical production gives these performers a comfort zone in which they can explore their creative sides.

Both on and off stage, AUTISM: THE MUSICAL is a call-to-arms, bringing attention to a modern-day epidemic, all the while celebrating the way the human spirit can overcome any challenge.

Autism News Update

New studies in pregnant mice using antibodies against fetal brains made by the mothers of autistic children show that immune cells can cross the placenta and trigger neurobehavioral changes similar to autism in the mouse pups.

A report on the research from investigators at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center published online in the Journal of Neuroimmunology expands on a 2008 report from the same team showing that mothers of autistic children tested positive for fetal brain antibodies. Antibodies are proteins the body naturally makes to attack foreign tissues, viruses or bacteria. Because a growing fetus is not "rejected" by the mother's immune system even though some of its DNA is "foreign" (from the father), scientists have long suspected that some combination of maternal and fetal biological protection is at work. The new research from Hopkins, however, suggests that the protective system is not perfect and that antibodies are not only made but are re-circulated back to the fetus through the placenta, possibly triggering inflammation in the brain and leading to a cascade of neurological changes resulting in neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism.

Despite this new evidence, the researchers warn against over-interpreting the results, saying prenatal exposure to maternal antibodies is likely only one of several factors implicated in autism.

10 Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew

1. I am first and foremost a child

My autism is only one aspect of my total character. It does not define me as a person. Are you a person with thoughts, feelings and many talents, or are you individualized by one trait?

2. My sensory perceptions are disordered

This means that the ordinary sights, sounds, tastes and touches of ever day that you may not even notice can be downright painful for me. The very environment in which I have to live often seems hostile. I may seem withdrawn or belligerent to you but I am really just trying to defend myself.

3. Distinguish between ?won?t? and ?can?t?

It isn?t that I don?t listen to instructions. It?s that I can?t understand you. When you call me from across the room, this is what I hear,? @#$%^&*?, Billy. ?*&^%$#.? Instead, approach me and speak directly to me in plain words: ?Please put your book in your desk, Billy. It?s time to go to lunch.?

4. I am a concrete thinker

It?s very confusing when you say, ?Hold your horses, cowboy!? when you want me to stop running. Don?t tell me something is a ?piece of cake? when there is no dessert in sight and what you really mean is, ?This will be easy for you.?

5. Be patient with my limited vocabulary

It?s hard for me to tell you what I need when I don?t know the words to describe my feelings. I may be hungry, frustrated, frightened or confused but right now those words are beyond my ability to express. Be alert for body language, withdrawal, agitation or other signs that something is wrong.

April 7: Autism Speaks' Project of the Month
Photobucket

This month, Autism Speaks is focusing on genetic research. Genetic research is important because in the future it will allow us to detect children at risk for autism at birth. The Autism Genome Project is researching the genes in the body that indicate a susceptibility to autism, the combination of genes that work together to increase susceptibility, and which genes interact with the environment to increase susceptibility. Understanding the genes that contribute to autism is also one way of discovering the biological basis of autism, which is critical for developing medical treatments. To donate the Autism Genome Project, click here.[more...]

What is Autism?
Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Autism impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe.[more...]

..he told me she had Autism.. Check Evan Farmer?s Blog!
There are those few moments in life when everything you thought you understood about yourself gets turned on it's head. One of those moments happend to me the day I met Michelle King, front person for the band Flame. (Click the name to go to their site!) My good friend and now business partner David owns a recording studio in upstate New York. It's the kind of recording studio you see pictured on the front cover of Mix magazine (in fact I think it has graced several covers) One day while I was there doing voice overs for While You Were Out, he played me some music he was producing from a band called Flame. He made a BIG point to tell me that the tracks were raw, just recorded live from beginning to end (unlike the punched-in produced music style today), and he wanted my opinion. I listened to a cover of Rocketman sung by this soulful female voice. For the first time I understood what that song was about - I used to think it was just about 1970's drug use or something, but her interpretation told a different story. One about being on the road, loneliness, isolation, the hang ups of success, losing your bearings, and not feeling grounded. It was really amazing. I was impressed but, then again David's a talented musician (world class drummer) himself, and a tremendous producer, so I assumed he was trying to impress me with his chops. Then he slid a brochure over to me with a picture of the band. My eyes were immediately drawn to the crutches, wheelchairs, the faces of down syndrome, and... the smiles on all of their faces. David said, "This is the band I just played you." Every single member had a significant disability crossing the range of conditions you'd imagine you'd find at a special needs center - precisely where this band was formed. On her way into the studio at this moment happened to be Michelle - the lead singer and guitarist. She looked like any other person, so I asked David privately what disability she had and David said,"...her GIFT was music." Pressing, he told me she had Autism[more...]

CADBURY GOES TRAFFIK FREE
Photobucket

Let's celebrate the amazing news that by the end of summer 2009, Cadbury's Dairy Milk bars can be part of our diet again!

We congratulate Cadbury on their commitment to justice and now look to their policy being adopted across their entire product range.

Cadbury's decision demonstrates the power of ordinary consumers in bringing change and freedom. Two years ago, STOP THE TRAFFIK met with Cadbury and was told that a fairtrade Cadbury's bar was impossible and impracticable.

This is a victory for every person who has complained, campaigned and spread the message. But most of all, it is a victory for every child held in exploitative labour on West African cocoa farms. It is important to remember though that all exploited children will not be free until Mars, Nestle, Lindt, Hershey and all the others have put human rights before profit and make similar announcements.

STOP THE TRAFFIK has been calling for individual companies to take responsibility for the chocolate they sell and asking for it to be traffik free. This is a very significant step in our campaign.

If you've been part of this, e-mail it to your local press and tell them of the campaigning you did.

Together we will STOP THE TRAFFIK[more...]

After reading blog after blog on other sites from my favorite bloggers urging me to vote for one person, or another, or at all, I definetley had to take a moment and put up our public service announcement as well.

Everyone here obviously has a voice, and obviously likes to use it, or at least read what others have to say, so if you are an American, of voting age, and registered, I urge you to get out there and use your voice!

I had a strong opinion, and just wanted to make sure that I wasn't being secretly influenced by the media, celebrities or my friends, so I just spent the last 5 hours reading over it all again. It felt like a college cram session, but I feel more secure in my decision at this point.

    Do You Feel?

Okay, not only is this an opportunity for me to pull a Pete Wentz and post pics of myself in a cute new tee and an opp to post a bulletin gushing about my love for one of my fave artists, but it's also an opp to tell you guys about an amazing new charitable organization that reminds us a lot of our mission here at The One Love. Bryce Avary (aka The Rocket Summer) has started a new clothing line called Call It Captivate. Much like the way our TOL bloggers choose the charity which they would like the proceeds from their ad revenue to be donated to, when you purchase a tee from Call It Captivate, even when purchasing on the road, you can choose the charity which you would like the proceeds from your purchase to be donated!

Recently, I picked up this snazzy tee at a TRS show in ATL and chose to donate the proceeds from my purchase to The American Cancer Society, which of course funds breast cancer research!

Click here to shop now! Click here for a list of charities that are supported.

Oh, and we also recommend that you watch this video, it might just change your perspective...
